Methyl-salicylate
Methyl-salicylate has long been used in folk medicine: it originates from salicylates extracted from willow bark. Gaultheria oil or Wintergreen oil is a natural compound that can be produced by several plant species, predominantly evergreen plants. The leaves and bark of willow trees (that contain salicylic acid) were used in folk medicine to reduce fever and pain even 2000 years ago. Methyl-salicylate is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory compound that inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) isoenzymes.Among other processes, these enzymes are responsible for producing pain and inflammation. All in all, Methyl-salicylate is known for its efficient anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effect. It dilates the blood vessels and causes local redness. For external use in creams and ointments, it is known as having a warming, muscle-relaxing, local redness-inducing effect, as well as a pain reliever. It is most often used in warm-up creams or those that relieve local pain and inflammation in order to counteract muscle soreness.
Comfrey
It is commonly used for treating bruises, contusions, hematoma and sprains; since it has an anti-inflammatory and regenerative effect, it is highly effective in speeding up the healing process of such injuries. Applied externally by a gentle massage, it is used for the treatment of lesions, sprains, contusions and varicose veins.
Arnica
One of the most loved and oldest herbal remedies among sportspersons. Folk medicine has been using it as an anti-inflammatory and pain-reliever, as well as for soothing itchiness and improving wound healing.
Rosemary
One of the most popular herbs for alleviating musculoskeletal pain. It is an important ingredient in products offering treatment for arthritis, muscle soreness and muscle stiffness. Due to its local circulatory boosting effect, it is an effective muscle-relaxant, pain-reliever and anti-inflammatory. When applied, it enhances circulation in the affected area, providing warmth and relaxation for the underlying muscles.
Centella Asiatica (Tiger Grass)
The common name “Tiger Grass” originates from observations in the wild: wounded tigers usually rub their aching body parts to this particular plant. In Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, it is used as an anti-inflammatory and for tissue regeneration. It has been used to reduce inflammation and to speed up wound healing, as it strengthens the walls of blood vessels, increases their flexibility, and has a beneficial, activating effect on capillary circulation. Since it boosts circulation in blood vessels, it aids the regeneration of bodily tissue.
Juniper
It is used in folk medicine for treating the inflammation of joints, rheumatism and gout. If massaged into the affected area, it boosts circulation, helps to detoxify the body, and helps the treatment of gout symptoms and other joint-related ailments. It has pain-relieving and muscle-relaxing properties, and it also reduces swelling. Since it contains a high amount of antioxidants, it is a widely used component in anti-inflammatory products.
Horse-chestnut
Folk medicine uses horse-chestnut extract to treat varicose veins and circulatory issues, as well as for strengthening the blood vessel walls. It has an astringent effect on dilated blood vessels of the skin (i.e. decreases the appearance of varicose veins), and it may help boost blood circulation. It may have a beneficial effect on capillary circulation and may strengthen the walls of blood vessels. It invigorates overexerted, fatigued feet, and decreases cramps and spasms.
Calendula
It stimulates wound healing, increases fibroblast proliferation, has anti-inflammatory properties, and alleviates itchiness.
Shea butter
It softens, nourishes and regenerates the skin, protects the skin from drying out, and restores skin elasticity. It is highly recommended for dry, cracked skin, and to alleviate the symptoms of skin irritation. There is a long-lasting moisturizing effect that helps restore skin elasticity. It makes the skin softer and smoother.
Olive oil
It has two main beneficial properties in terms of skincare: first of all, it is an antioxidant, so it mitigates the cell-damaging effects of free radicals, and secondly it helps to retain moisture in the skin, since it rather easily mixes with water, so it is an efficient carrier.
